My children spent most of the day outdoors, soaking up the wonderful warm springtime Sydney weather and absorbing essential vitamin D, without an i-Pad or electronic gadget in sight. They played in the backyard building tents and engaging in old-fashioned games of tips, hide and seek and assorted ball sports. Along with a carefree bicycle ride winding through familiar neighbourhood streets and catching up with friends in the park, it was no wonder they were famished by dinner. In fact the only times they came indoors all day was to gulp down glasses of water, grab a piece of fruit or home cooked chocolate oat cookie and to wolf down lunch.
As for our 12 day old infant? Well, he too enjoyed the sunny weather, although a much smaller dose than his older energetic siblings, and gazed about in wonder before spending the rest of the day feeding, sleeping and being cuddled.
After our enjoyable and relaxing Sunday outdoors, a simple but satisfying dinner was in order. Something easy to prepare, easy to eat and easy to clean up. Chilcott’s Butchery had made up a couple trays of tender, pinky-toned lamb kebabs which we sprinkled with fresh oregano from the veggie patch and ground cumin. These were briskly barbecued and served up with a mixed salad dressed with freshly squeezed lemon juice, olive oil and sea salt and a big bowl of aromatic Saffron Citrus Pilaf (recipe published on the 3rd July) speckled with glistening ruby red dried cranberries.
A perfect start to the school holidays. Fingers crossed the buoyant mood and brilliant weather continues!
