Look at these gorgeous, glossy eggs that I coloured in time for our Orthodox Easter celebration today. Displayed on these two platters there don’t appear to be the six dozen that I decorated – well, less two little ones that slipped out of my hands and broke – but only two! Count them up and yes, there really are a barnyard’s worth of eggs.

Surrounded by pots of bubbling egg dye, cartons of fresh eggs, cards of stickers and transfers I working patiently and methodically to end up with this collection. My girls would usually help, but this year they spent a couple of days with their Baba Dragica working together on decorating eggs at her house. That’s where we enjoyed an extended family Easter feast – so much wonderful food! My keen kitchen hand came in the form of my five year old son Luka, who enthusiastically stuck the tiny Easter themed prints onto the finished eggs once they had cooled. I did need to initially convince him to put away his Star Wars stickers because I was 100 per cent sure that Hans Solo, Luke Skywalker, the Wookie and Darth Vader did not celebrate Easter.

I also baked these sweet bunny shaped biscuits and laid them out in a basket for the children to enjoy on Easter morning. Unfortunately they had not cooled sufficiently for me to decorate before heading off to the Sydney Opera House last night to watch the ballet Giselle, with my foodie friend Stephanie. So after arriving home, I tip-toed into the kitchen and set to work rolling out fondant and hand painting bunny features on each edible creature. It was worth the effort because Luka was convinced they were courtesy of the Easter Bunny. Of course the floury footprints across our dinner table helped.
